Meowza opens to feline fanfare

The Dayton Mall has a new novel niche market. Cat lovers will be thrilled by the new feline boutique Meowza, a group effort involving a number of artists, the Humane Society of Dayton and incidentally involving at least six folks with Oakwood connections.

Brian Weltge is director of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton and a 1982 graduate of Oakwood High School. He is credited with starting the store as a fundraising effort for the spay/neuter program as well as the foster care program for kittens. Cat adoptions are another avenue for providing homes to cats looking for owners.

The store sells various cat supplies and themed items, some made by Oakwood resident and artist Amy Gantt. She has been in the business of producing greeting cards, tote bags, teapot prints, gardening accessories with cat-oriented graphics on them. She also has a line of high-end T-shirts with her artwork on them produced by Oakwood residents Vince and Wendy Lewis of Hooper Concepts. The store can count 136 products so far that are sold over the counter. Oakwood resident Alexis Wagner is general manager of the store and is enjoying her new job so far.

Standing around talking with the various folks from Oakwood, who should walk in but Tammy Whalen, who is a board member of the Humane Society and lifelong Oakwoodian to boot. As an added twist of irony, she admits that she is allergic to cats. “I make money for cats,” she said. She was in the store dropping off promotional posters for an upcoming fundrais ing gala to be held at the Dayton Masonic Center entitled “Catwalk at the Meowlin Rouge” to be held Jan. 25.

The store is located on the east side of the Dayton Mall walkway adjacent to Sears.

DREAM

DREAM

I just love summer time!  Summer is a time to be nonscheduled and use your imagination.  When my kids say “I’m bored”, I respond by saying “Great! Now you will use your imagination!”

The other day I took them to a park that has an area for canoes.  We blew up our little raft and I set them afloat.  They had such a great time and I loved watching them use their imaginations.  They pretended to be on an Island and had so much fun trying to row the boat.  At one time my son was singing on the top of his lungs “row, row, row your boat…”  The geese didn’t seem to mind at all.

In our scheduled life I am always searching for the moments to use my imagination and Dream!

“Yea! to Spring and Warm weather!”

It has been a long winter and I am ready to be outside and be active!  The summer plans include tennis, swimming and lots of drawing outdoors.  I love to go to a park and draw the beautiful flowers and cute bugs.  My daughter doesn’t think they are so cute but with the right imagination they become wonderful characters in my paintings.  If you look carefully at my art work you may see a little ladybug on a flower http://www.lulabellart.com/forgardener.html or even on the

golf course! http://www.lulabellart.com/ladybug-golf1.html

The t-shirts are a wonderful way to celebrate the season and add ”a smile to your soul”!  http://www.lulabellart.com/saletshirts.html

It’s a Dog’s World

February 26, 2008 by lulabellart

dog-collection.jpg

I  have been asked, “what about the dogs?”  Yes, we do have dogs too.  The cats have been getting a lot of attention and the dogs want to be seen.  So here are a few of my dogs from the collection.  Aren’t they cute?

The first is my dog Scooby.  In the summer time he likes to sit quietly under the butterfly bush and watch the butterflies as they flutter about.  I drew this one while sitting outside with Scooby and butterflies.  Warm summer days are the best.

Next, is Zip.  He is a border collie who is very active chasing wild geese and enjoying nature.  Zip has taken a moment out of his busy schedule to smell the flowers.

On the bottom left is Lily.  She is a sweet mixed breed.  If you look closely at the orange lily you will see the little ladybug.  In nature friends come in all sizes.

Finally, one of my favorites is the  Turtle and Dog.  I love this because it captures a moment in time.  I love the special moments in nature when time seems to stand still.

The dog in “Turtle and Dog” needs a name.  Would you like to help name the dog? Send your ideas to us!  We will pick one and let you know!  Thanks for your help.  A cute dog like that needs a good name.

I hope you have enjoyed the dogs.  They are excited to meet you, too.
